ERN position paper on Energy Performance of Buildings Directive

Wednesday 12th April 2017

On 21 March, the Europe Regional Network (ERN) submitted a position paper to MEP Bendt Bendtsen, the rapporteur for the Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD), setting out key elements the Network believes should be the focus of the updated EPBD.

The paper highlights the importance of leveraging national renovation strategies to deliver on the EU’s long-term goals for 2050. Specifically, the paper notes that tackling the challenge of building renovation, and accelerating the depth and rate of renovation, is critical in keeping the EU on track with its 2030 and 2050 climate and energy ambitions.

The paper also outlines our support for the digitalisation of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) as a means of evolving towards ‘Building Renovation Passports’ (BRP) and notes that a ‘Smartness Indicator’ can complement the EPCs by providing an indication of a building’s smart grid readiness and the ability of the building for integrating smart controlling devices.
