Shaw Contract partners with renowned designer William McDonough on recyclable carpet range

Thursday 04th May 2017

Shaw Contract, the world’s largest carpet manufacturer and a member of WorldGBC’s Corporate Advisory Board, has relaunched a completely recyclable carpet range designed in collaboration with renowned architect and designer William McDonough, the champion of Cradle to Cradle® design.

First launched in 2003, the A Walk in the Garden collection was inspired by the different landscapes McDonough encountered on a walk in a garden in Chengdu, China, where he was struck by the harmony of man-made surfaces in nature. The collection signalled Shaw Contract’s first use of the materials EcoWorx and Eco Solution Q to create a completely recyclable, Cradle to Cradle® Certified collection, which informs their manufacturing practices to this day.

Designed with future impact in mind, William McDonough created the Cradle to Cradle® Products Program, espousing the message that materials and products can be designed to continuously improve over time. The multi-attribute methodology is one of the most stringent certifications in the products industry, and bases its assessment across five categories - material health, material reutilisation, renewable energy, water usage and social fairness.

The relaunch of the collection is a celebration of Shaw Contract’s commitment to manufacturing environmentally responsible products, made for positive impact and reutilisation.

Commenting on the Cradle to Cradle® philosophy, William McDonough said: “I think it’s really important for our children to know that there’s a world of abundance ahead of them, not just a world of limits. We’re actually giving a gift to the future: we’re increasing the opportunity for the next generation to celebrate the same things we can.”
