World Environment Day, celebrated annually on 5 June is the United Nations flagship day for encouraging global awareness and action to protect our environment. Since it began 45 years ago, this event has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated in over 100 countries. The theme for World Environment Day 2019 is Air Pollution.
Air pollution, often referred to as the ‘silent’ killer, is a global health emergency. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 90% of people worldwide breathe polluted air, causing nearly 7 million premature deaths annually.
