SUMMARY:The Four ‘Scopes’ of Social Impact: How can we action the ‘S’ in ESG across the built environment?
DESCRIPTION:Social impact within the built environment — otherwise known as the ‘S’ in environmental\, social and corporate governance (ESG) — is about the effect that buildings and infrastructure has on communities. Yet it is often overlooked or misunderstood.  \n\n\n\nThis webinar takes a deep dive into how industry can define\, address\, and measure social impact\, using a unique framework laid out in ‘scopes’ (a familiar terminology used to define greenhouse gas reductions).  \n\n\n\nThe built environment has a critical role to play in the transition to zero carbon and sustainable development\, being responsible for 37% of global carbon emissions and an employer of 7% of the entire global workforce. But the climate crisis is also a social one\, and people must be recognised as a critical part of the solution.  \n\n\n\nThat’s why last year the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) launched a position paper — ‘Social Impact across the Built Environment’. Developed in collaboration with our global network and supported by the UN High-Level Climate Champions (HLCCs)\, the paper sets out a revolutionary framework with a clear definition of key social issues related to the building and construction life cycle\, organised for the first time into ‘scopes’. \n\n\n\nAt the webinar\, our expert panel of speakers will explore: \n\n\n\n\nThe social dimension of sustainability (the ‘S’ in ESG) and the challenges we face across the building and construction sector to address it.\n\n\n\nHow stakeholders across the sector can actively and successfully address social impact.\n\n\n\nShowcase action-oriented strategies which are creating positive social impact across the industry.\n\n\n\n\nJoin us to discover why social impact is fundamental to supporting the transition to an equitable and resilient future for everyone\, everywhere. \n\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Taxonomies and green buildings: How far have we come?
DESCRIPTION:In this Sustainable Finance webinar co-hosted by World Green Building Council (WorldGBC) and Climate Bonds Initiative\, we will explore how different taxonomies have addressed green buildings and the impact these have had on redirecting finance towards sustainable development\, with a special emphasis on the decarbonisation of buildings.   \n\n\n\nTaxonomy is a classification system which defines sustainable economic activities. In other words\, it sets out a definition for how industry can drive investment towards sustainable projects and activities in order to meet sustainability goals. In this webinar we focus on the vital role of green buildings in achieving these objectives.  \n\n\n\nHow far have governments come in implementing their taxonomies? What is the uptake of these taxonomies across the construction and real estate sector? And what must we do to go further when there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution? \n\n\n\nJoin our webinar on 11 April 2024\, 11:00 CET\, to gain a better of understanding of:  \n\n\n\n\nThe building criteria in key taxonomies and how they are instrumental in supporting the transition to low-carbon and resilient buildings.\n\n\n\nThe challenges industry faces in implementing those taxonomies\, plus examples of local and global solutions\, that address the decarbonisation of the built environment.\n\n\n\nThe impact that taxonomies have had in redirecting finance towards green buildings to date\, including a closer look at innovative financing mechanisms and investment trends.\n\n\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Building a Water-Resilient Future
DESCRIPTION:How we can align action on water across the built environment. \n\n\n\nThe fresh water crisis is one of the greatest humanitarian crises we face today.  \n\n\n\nThe current industrial practices of water use and disposal across sectors around the world are affecting over  a quarter of the world population in unhealthy ways. In addition to this\, around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions are related to water use\, storage and distribution. Yet addressing these issues are some of the most overlooked aspects of building\, architecture and construction. So how do we change course and align buildings’ climate action with water? \n\n\n\nAs part of our commitment to increasing international alignment around sustainability across the global built environment\, World Green Building Council’s (WorldGBC) Circularity Accelerator programme is hosting a webinar dedicated to exploring the consistently overlooked issue of the water crisis. We will also dive into the relationship between water and carbon emissions\, and how we can align global action to implement circular life cycles.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will be able to: \n\n\n\n\nHear from international experts on how\, and why\, water has been ‘left behind’ in the prioritisation of climate action. What is the role of the building and construction sector in addressing this? \n\n\n\nLearn from case studies around the world on the solutions already being actioned to tackle water use.\n\n\n\nDiscuss potential actions to take forward as a network which can foster stronger alliances and collaboration\, and lead transformation.\n\n\n\nTake a deep dive into the position paper ‘Building a Water-Resilient Future’\, launched by WorldGBC in 2023.\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will also explore the views and initiatives of international organisations\, as well as Green Building Councils and Partners from across the WorldGBC network\, to discuss how we can connect water to the energy crisis\, and build upon the dialogue to bring water upfront in the actions of the building and construction sector.   \n\n\n\nThe webinar will run on two sessions on the day to cater for different time zones: \n\n\n\nRegister for the 12:30 BST session here. \n\n\n\nRegister for the 16:30 BST session here.

SUMMARY:Quantifying the Human\, Social & Environmental Impact of Good Design
DESCRIPTION:Spaces and places are first and foremost designed for the people who occupy them – yet they have an environmental and societal impact both within a local and global context. Often\, the benefits of positive environmental impact – and specifically to the occupants and society at large – are intangible yet significant. In many instances these benefits lead to economic advantages and fulfill the theory of the ‘Triple Bottom Line.’  \n\n\n\nUsing their own experience\, case studies and research\, the panel will highlight the impact of thoughtful design on human experience and society. Panelists will also share thoughts on efforts to quantify and monetise the impact of good\, sustainable design. The discussion will cover how the UK government is encouraging inclusion of social value in both public and private projects. We’ll discuss how the private commercial sector is responding to the social asks and incorporating in their projects\, and how designers and planner are addressing human well-being and greater social benefits. We will also discuss how social value is being incorporated beyond UK through voluntary certification processes including LEED v.5 and Fitwel in the United States and across the globe.

SUMMARY:Africa Green Building Summit & Future Cities Conference
DESCRIPTION:This second edition of the Future Cities Summit is poised to significantly advance the conversation on sustainable urban development in Nigeria\, and the wider Africa. The Summit theme\, “Building Resilient Futures: Integrating Carbon Neutrality\, Circular Economy & Inclusive Urban Development\,” is inspired by the World GBC’s Global Policy Principles for a Sustainable Built Environment\, and its Building the Transition campaign. Both these initiatives draw on and extend the vision set forth in the earlier Africa Manifesto for Sustainable Cities and the Built Environment\, embodying the Manifesto’s call for “…a net zero carbon\, healthy\, equitable\, resilient\, environmentally-sustainable and economically-inclusive built environment for every African\, everywhere.” \n\n\n\nThis year’s Summit\, co-located with World GBC Africa Regional Network’s Africa Green Building Summit\, will explore the truth that Africa’s rapid urban transformation represents both challenge and opportunity. The challenge of overcoming barriers from resource limitations\, governance limitations and socioeconomic constraints. Balanced by the opportunity to define a uniquely African urban paradigm\, leveraging on the immense potential of Africa’s youthful and entrepreneurial population\, and its dynamic and rapidly growing cities. Over four days\, the Summit will dive deep into what these challenges and opportunities mean for the continent\, aiming to craft relevant policy responses\, innovative strategies\, and collaborative approaches to address the evolving needs of Africa’s rapidly changing urban landscapes. \n\n\n\nThe Summit will feature keynote addresses from distinguished speakers\, sharing visions of Africa’s urban futures and setting the stage for a series of expert-led plenary sessions. These plenary sessions will examine various facets of sustainable urban development\, with an emphasis on carbon neutrality\, resource circularity\, and inclusive urban development. The Summit will also feature interactive breakout sessions\, designed to stimulate in-depth dialogue on localizing the policy formulations encapsulated in the World GBC’s Africa Manifesto and its Global Policy Principles. As a gathering point for green building stakeholders and experts\, both locally and internationally\, the Summit will also feature exhibitions\, product expos and awards\, showcasing the latest innovations in green building practices\, sustainable products\, and services. \n\n\n\nThe Future Cities Summit – Africa Green Building Summit 2024 is more than a conference. It’s the crucible where Africa’s urban future is forged and refined. It’s where the collective wisdom of the past meets the innovative spirit of the present to conceptualise a sustainable\, resilient\, and inclusive future for the continent. Let’s take this opportunity to redefine what it means to live in a city and\, in doing so\, redefine what it means to live on this planet.

SUMMARY:World Water Week | Arup & WorldGBC
DESCRIPTION:Ask yourself this: How can we embed water circularity into our projects to manage water more effectively? \n\n\n\nIf we redefine water as a resource for value creation and implement circular principles across the world\, we could unlock $4.5 trillion of value. \n\n\n\nWater is one of our most valuable resources. However\, the hashtag#builtenvironment is putting increasing pressure on this already overburdened global resource. \n\n\n\nIn support of World Water Week\, 25—29 August 2024\, WorldGBC partners Arup will explore how water circularity can be incorporated into hashtag#builtenvironment projects to manage water more effectively and create a more water-resilient future.

SUMMARY:United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16)
DESCRIPTION:Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16) \n\n\n\nThe Conference of the Parties (COP) is the governing body of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)\, an international treaty adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. \n\n\n\nIts objective is to establish agendas\, commitments and frameworks for action to conserve biological diversity and its sustainable use\, as well as to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. \n\n\n\nThe COP is held every two years. In 2024\, for the first time in history\, Colombia will host the 16th edition of the biannual Conference on Biodiversity. Each of these Conferences seeks to take decisive measures for the protection of biological diversity. \n\n\n\nThis year\, COP16 will take place in Cali\, capital of the department of Valle del Cauca (Colombia)\, between October 21 and November 1\, 2024. \n\n\n\nThe slogan “Peace with Nature” is a call to reflection to improve the relationship we have with the environment\, to rethink an economic model that does not prioritize the extraction\, overexploitation and pollution of nature. \n\n\n\nFind out more.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Cities and Buildings in Transition: Systems Change for a Resilient Future
DESCRIPTION:Our cities and built environments have profound impacts on people and planet. Where people live and work\, how they get from one place to another\, and the level of access they have to basic services and infrastructure all have impacts not only on quality of life but on climate change and biodiversity as well. \n\n\n\nPlease join Systems Change Lab\, WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities and NewClimate Institute on October 31st to celebrate World Cities Day and explore the current state of our cities and the built environment as well as what action is needed this critical decade and beyond. \n\n\n\nThe cities and buildings systems are deeply interconnected\, both with each other and with other key systems in the Systems Change Lab platform like governance\, transport\, and energy supply. Intentional planning with a systemic lens is needed to decarbonize buildings and cities — and to ensure equity and access to basic needs like housing\, transportation\, energy\, water and sanitation\, food\, green space and more. \n\n\n\nHigh-level voices in these fields will come together to discuss the major shifts needed for sustainable cities and buildings\, where we are falling behind\, and where we are finding signals of hope. Join us to discover the role of cities and buildings in systems change. \n\n\n\nFind out more and register.
