A Message from the WorldGBC Chairman

A message from WorldGBC Chairman, Bruce Kerswill:

Dear GBCs

“CHAMPIONS OF THE EARTH”… that’s what we are!

On 7 November, USGBC was given the award ‘CHAMPIONS OF THE EARTH’ – the top UN prize for inspirational service to the planet.

The prize is the United Nation's highest environmental accolade, and is awarded to ’the innovators and policymakers whose service to the environment is saving lives, improving livelihoods and bettering environmental governance and conservation’.

USGBC was awarded the prize ‘for changing the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated’.

Gisele Bündchen, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador, quoted, “We are back to honour real cool people. People who are being visionary, people who are changing lives, people who are super heroes in terms of the environment.”

What a brilliant acknowledgement!

Congratulations to Rick Fedrizzi, Roger Platt and the whole of the USGBC – it is a wonderful accolade, and well-deserved.

But you know, all GBCs do the same work – we’re all involved in changing the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated – and so I have no hesitation in claiming a small piece of that recognition for all GBCs around the world! As Rick Fedrizzi said, “This is for all of us!”

It’s proof (if we need it!) that the people involved in our movement are “cool people”, and that our work is recognised and appreciated on a global level.

So as we come to the end of what has been a pretty tough year, I invite you to bask a little bit in the reflected glory of the USGBC’s award, and consider yourselves to be ‘Champions of the Earth’!

On behalf of WorldGBC, I’d like to wish everyone a blessed and fun festive season and a happy New Year!
