Buildings or developments that are verified and certified as “net zero operational energy and/or carbon.” The building should demonstrate the highest levels of energy efficiency with the use of either renewables generated onsite or renewable energy procured offsite.
This was the largest project to receive Zero Net Energy certification by the Living Future Institute at the time of certification. The building is also LEED Platinum certified. Due in part to its prominence in funding conservation, science, and environmental causes, the foundation has chosen to lead by example by employing replicable building methods, materials and technologies that can transform the marketplace. The building operates in natural ventilation model for half the year, where the mechanical systems shut down and occupants are instructed to open their windows for fresh air. Thermal energy storage, chilled beams, dedicated outside air systems, fully dimmable lighting fixtures, and circuit-by-circuit power monitoring are some of the facilities novel features. The project uses 50 percent less water than baseline, and captures and filters rainwater for reuse in landscaping and toilet flushing. The facility features a green roof above its main conference room.
