Plant a Sensor is a thought leadership campaign, helping businesses and organisations measure and share air quality data from both the inside and outside of a building.
The data from the sensors is collected in an interactive map where stakeholders can share learnings and solutions to tackling air pollution in the built environment.
Plant a Sensor is led by the World Green Building Council (WorldGBC), in collaboration with RESET and our partners at the Wilson Centre and the Earth Day Network.
Originally set up as part of Earth Challenge 2020, the campaign is now being activated by Green Building Councils (GBCs) across WorldGBC’s regional networks.
GBCs are using the monitors to track air quality, and then using the data to advocate the importance of sustainable built environments which mitigate pollution and enhance both human and environmental health.
All data collected through Plant a Sensor will be made publicly available via RESET Earth.
Plant a Sensor is operating in around 24 countries worldwide and is dedicated to improving human health as part of a sustainable built environment.

The consolidated data collected by Plant a Sensor will facilitate a global boost in awareness about the extent and severity of the air pollution crisis, and the role that the built environment must play to improve our health and quality of life.
We also expect the campaign to trigger an urgent and appropriate response from citizens, the private sector, and policy makers to accelerate action to eliminate the pollution that is causing climate change and impacting the health of millions of people.
The building and construction sector is responsible for almost 40% of energy-related carbon emissions.
Air pollution is a substantial contributor to global climate change, and the largest environmental threat to human health today.
Internal air pollutants from poor quality building fabric, unhealthy materials, or unsuitable ventilation pose further risks to human health beyond those circulating in our outdoor air.
WorldGBC will support this campaign by engaging our network and audience in the global roll-out of air quality monitors. We will utilise the generated data to further our research and advocacy objectives on a global and regional level, also empowering GBCs on a national level.
We are aiming for global coverage – all regions of the earth, both within and outside of buildings.
We are looking to recruit both supporters and participants – namely any enthusiastic environmentalist happy to install one or more monitors.
