Bakang Moeng is a seasoned sustainability and green building expert with over 18 years of experience in the built environment sector, including more than 14 years at the forefront of green building consulting across South Africa. She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Africa Regional Network, bringing deep technical expertise and a strategic advocacy lens to advancing sustainable urban development and climate resilience across the continent.
Bakang has played a pioneering role in shaping South Africa’s green building landscape. Her notable contributions include leading the certification of the country’s first 5-Star Green Star As-Built office building, co-developing the Green Star SA Public and Education Rating Tool, and spearheading the integration of socio-economic standards into green building rating systems—an African first. She has advised municipalities, including the City of Tshwane, on energy efficiency and low-carbon building strategies, and has served in various national technical working groups focused on sustainable precincts, public infrastructure, and inclusive green growth.
In her current role at the Green Building Council South Africa, she leads public sector advocacy and sustainability engagements, helping shape policy frameworks and capacity-building initiatives for greener cities. She is also a Green Star Accredited Professional, an EDGE Expert, and a GBCSA faculty member who has trained professionals across South Africa.
