3. Act
Implement energy efficiency measures, electrification of equipment, fuel switching, and investment in on-site renewable energy and/or renewable energy procurement to decarbonise manufacturing plants. Target 100% renewable energy to power operations by 2025. Embed sustainability into NCM selection and standard plant design. Evaluate and continuously reduce the whole lifecycle carbon of Nexii buildings.
5. Advocate
Demonstrate leadership through industry partnerships and collaboration. Develop high performance envelope products that significantly reduce end-to-end carbon emissions, with a target of 50% less embodied carbon. Work with integrated technology partners to deliver scalable net-zero carbon whole building solutions. Target net zero carbon across entire value chain by 2030, to be verified by SBTi.
NZCB Commitment & The Climate Pledge: Accelerating Decarbonisation
Nexii is leading and advocating for a rapid transition to net zero carbon, with buildings at the forefront of significant emissions reductions. Decarbonizing our manufacturing plants is critical both to Nexii’s embodied carbon metrics and to delivering on our net zero targets.
In our inaugural Profound Impact Report (2022), Nexii pledged to achieve net zero carbon across our operations and value chain by 2030. Key elements of our net zero roadmap include: retrofitting and designing innovative facilities, prioritizing low-carbon business travel, and building strategic supply chain relationships. Nexii is committed to the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard and currently in the process of finalizing our target based on our baseline inventory.
In 2022, Nexii saw a 10%+ reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions despite doubling our panel production compared to our 2021 baseline, thanks to building envelope improvements and increased equipment efficiency. In 2022, we secured renewable natural gas (landfill-derived biomethane) for our west coast facility’s annual usage, a significant part of our emissions. Longer term, we are prioritizing fuel switching, electrification and access to low-carbon grids and renewable electricity.
Nexii’s climate commitments span our operations and value chain, including our product embodied and operational carbon. Nexii is committed to attaining 50% less embodied carbon in our products versus conventional construction by 2025. To meet this target, we are pursuing innovative materials, durable and low-carbon panel design, elimination of waste, integration with mass timber, and design for reuse.
Our EV charging system, VersiCharge XL, developed jointly with Siemens, allows for faster installation with less site disruption, flexible design, and full system disassembly and reuse. LCA results suggest a 45% reduction in embodied carbon compared to competing products.
All Nexii panels and products are designed for reuse and enable a commitment to end-of-life circularity practice. Nexii’s EPDs are currently undergoing critical third-party review by our Program Operator and incorporate embodied carbon impacts with and without reuse. Nexii is involved with advocacy work through RMI’s Advanced Building Consortium Embodied Carbon Working Group and the Carbon Leadership Forum, as well as direct engagement with Buy Clean legislators.
