Winners Announced: Asia Pacific Green Leadership Awards 2014

The winners of the World Green Building Council’s (WorldGBC’s) inaugural Asia Pacific Regional Network Leadership Awards in Green Building have been announced at a gala dinner in Singapore this evening.

Te Mirumiru, a bilingual child care centre in New Zealand, was presented with the Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance trophy.

Three companies were recognised in the Business Leadership in Sustainability category: Singapore’s City Developments Limited and Keppel Land Limited, and India’s ITC Limited – Hotels Division.

“The Leadership Awards in Green Building honour companies that are truly ‘walking the talk’ when it comes to sustainability, but also underscore that designing and delivering a green building is just the first step on the road to sustainability.  Embedding sustainable business practices takes time. Recognising and rewarding the companies committed to this journey is what sets these awards apart,” says the WorldGBC’s Chief Executive Officer, Jane Henley.

“The award winners demonstrate that we have the technologies and capabilities to design and construct buildings that protect the natural environment, improve energy security and resource efficiency and boost health and wellbeing.  We hope the winners will inspire other companies and project teams across the region to embrace sustainable practices,” says Shaw Contract Group’s Director of Global Marketing, Todd Jarvis.

Leadership in Sustainable Design and Performance

Te Mirumiru, a bilingual childcare center in New Zealand, was chosen as the winner from a field of 57 projects around the Asia Pacific region.

“Te Mirumiru is outstanding example of a building that engages and educates children about their culture, customs and the environment.  The judges selected Te Mirumiru from a competitive field for its intelligent design that applies green principles from the outset,” Ms Henley explains.

The passive environmental features include north-facing glazing, a super-insulated earth roof, rainwater capture, and a solar hot water underfloor system.  All spaces are naturally daylit and need no additional electrical lighting during the day.   The result is a building that is 70 percent more energy efficient than a similar code-compliant building.

The building achieved a 6 Green Star rating from the New Zealand Green Building Council – one of only three buildings in NZ to attain this, and the only Green Star-rated early childhood center in the whole of Australasia.

Business Leadership in Sustainability

Three winners were chosen from a field of 55 companies for their commitment to integrate sustainability into their business models.

City Developments Limited, Singapore

An early adopter of sustainability practices, CDL was the first company in Singapore to be listed on three leading global sustainability benchmarks.

CDL was also named a ‘Regional Sector Leader’ for Asia in the most recent Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark.

The first ever Green Mark Champion in 2008, CDL has amassed more than 70 BCA Green Mark developments.

“The award judges selected CDL for recognition, as it has the reach, the capacity and the senior management commitment to make a significant positive contribution to the built environment,” Ms Henley says.

ITC Limited – Hotels Division, India

India’s largest luxury hotel chain, ITC Limited – Hotels Division has made sustainability a central part of its business model.

ITC was the first company in India – and among the first 10 in the world – to publish a sustainability report in compliance with the Global Reporting Initiative.

All new hotels achieve LEED ratings and ITC’s Grand Chola in Chennai is the world’s largest LEED Platinum rated hotel.

“The judges see ITC as an exemplar of how strong engagement across an organisation leads to better policies and more sustainable outcomes,” Ms Henley explains.

Keppel Land Limited, Singapore

Keppel Land targets a minimum of BCA Green Mark Gold Plus for all of its Singapore developments, and equivalent for all new projects overseas.

To date, it has received 43 Green Mark certifications, and was named Green Mark Champion in 2014.

The award judges applauded Keppel Land’s comprehensive reporting practice, which includes sustainability KPIs for staff.

“Senior management’s commitment and willingness to engage in greening the sector is obvious, and deserving of recognition,” Ms Henley says.
