Green building certification systems are among the most powerful tools for transforming the built environment. Originally developed to improve energy efficiency, they have evolved into comprehensive frameworks that address environmental, social and economic sustainability across the entire building lifecycle.
These certifications have nearly tripled worldwide between 2015-2025, while certified floor area has grown by 20% over the past decade to 273 billion square meters. The much faster growth in the number of certifications than in certified floor area suggests increasing uptake among smaller buildings, pointing to improved accessibility and a stronger value proposition for certification.
Built on scientific evidence and developed through collaboration among industry experts, policymakers and practitioners, these systems provide clear, measurable benchmarks for sustainable building performance. Today, they cover priorities such as energy, water, materials, health, resilience, biodiversity, circularity and community impact, reflecting a holistic, systems-based approach to sustainability.
By defining and verifying the attributes of sustainable buildings, certification systems create market transparency, enable benchmarking, and provide a common language for investors, developers, owners and occupiers. As sustainability becomes increasingly integrated into investment decisions, market actors require reliable, comparable data. Certification systems help meet this need by translating complex building performance information into transparent, consistent and verifiable metrics that can support Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting, sustainable finance frameworks and investment decision-making.
As global challenges evolve, certification systems continue to adapt, integrating emerging priorities such as resilience, circularity, sufficiency and whole life carbon. Many now extend beyond design and construction to assess operational performance and end-of-life considerations, recognising that sustainability must be demonstrated throughout a building’s lifespan.
Some certification systems also provide dedicated pathways for zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions buildings (also referred to as zero carbon or zero emissions buildings), as well as zero energy and zero GHG emissions-ready buildings, each supported by distinct methodologies and performance criteria.
To provide a common point of reference, the following non-exhaustive list of certification systems has been organised using the UNEP–GlobalABC Buildings Breakthrough framework outlined in the report Near-Zero Emission and Resilient Buildings, led by WorldGBC. Although the framework focuses primarily on energy and GHG emissions considerations, certification systems generally encompass a much broader set of sustainability outcomes, including health, resilience, biodiversity, circularity, social value and resource efficiency.
