Michael Doust is Director of Urban Efficiency & Climate for WRI Ross Center for Sustainable Cities. As part of WRI’s program focused on more accessible, equitable, healthy and resilient cities, Doust leads global programming on inclusive and integrated climate and energy planning. As a core member of the Cities Executive Team, he also helps guide the overall strategy of the program.

Doust is a climate specialist with over 15 years of experience supporting cities in Africa, China, Europe, Latin America, North America and SE Asia. He is a lead author of the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories – the international standard for city-wide GHG inventories – and PAS 2070: Specification for the Assessment of GHG Emissions of a City. As chair of the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy Data Technical Working Group, Doust led the development of the Common Reporting Framework.

Prior to joining WRI, Doust served as Director of Measurement and Planning at C40 Cities, where he was responsible for delivery of a global technical assistance program supporting inclusive and science-based climate action planning across all C40 cities. As part of this effort, his team helped to translate the Paris Agreement to city-level action and developed a wide range of knowledge products to support ambitious climate action planning in all cities.

Previously Doust led a portfolio of environment projects for the Mayor of London.

Doust is a Chartered Environmentalist and has Master’s degrees in Environmental Management and Public Management, and a Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric and Soil Sciences.
